Graduated (MA) in History, post-graduated (MA) in Museum Studies and PhD in History of Art (University of Lisbon, Portugal). Professor at the Faculty of Letters (1979-1986) and at the College of Fine Arts (from 1987 to the present day), both belonging to the University of Lisbon. He is the author of the curricula of the BA and MA in Heritage and Museum Sciences and in Conservation Studies in the College of Fine Arts where he is Full Professor and has headed for the last seven years both the Scientific Committee and the Research Centre.
Curator and programmer of several major exhibitions and museums in Portugal, Spain and Brazil, namely, only to mention the most recent ones, the first Exhibition of the Hermitage Museum in Portugal (Art and Culture of the Russian Empire, 2007) and the Museum of the Orient, in Lisbon (2008). Author of the Scientific Revision for the Portuguese Version of the Janson’s History of Art for the Gulbenkian Foundation, published January 2010.
Author of several papers and books on Art Critics, Museum Collections and History of Portuguese Art and Culture, namely Portuguese Art in the Time of the Maritime Discoveries (1996), Flemish Art in the Museum of Sacred Art, Funchal, Madeira (1997), The Gothic Altarpiece of Saint James fighting the Moors (2002, together with José António Falcão), Portuguese Presence in the East (Editor, Museum of the Orient Catalogue, 2008), The Convent of Jesus Altarpiece by Jorge Afonso (1520-1530) in Setúbal (2013, together with several other authors).
He has been recently appointed by the Minister of Culture of Portugal Consultant for Heritage and Museums of the Government of Portugal.edit

We analyse two different kinds of portrait in the late Middle Ages in Portugal: one of a knight whose epitaph is much more a portrait of his deeds and of his family's ambitions; and another one, usually viewed as the source of the iconography of a Sait of the Roman Catholic Church but in fact is a portrait for marriage purposes that depicts not only the physical attributes of the sitter but her spirit and faith.
